The Miracle League of Del Mar (dba Miracle League of San Diego) is a charitable organization that provides children with mental or physical challenges an opportunity to play baseball as a team member in an organized league. In a unique public/non-profit partnership with the County of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department, and with the support of the San Diego Padres, we built the first ADA accessible ball field of its kind in Southern California. All games are played at the Miracle Field, a Little Padres Park, at San Dieguito County Park.
During each Miracle League game, every child is given the opportunity to hit the ball and score a run. Miracle League team members are assigned buddies who provide encouragement and assist with hitting the ball and running the bases. Buddies can be fellow schoolmates, adults, college students or anyone who wishes to volunteer his or her time to provide a child with the gift of baseball.
The Miracle Field, a Little Padres Park, at San Dieguito County Park
The $1.2 million Miracle Field was funded with public and private funds, grants and contributions. The field surface is Mondo’s Super X, a flat cushioned rubber mat that ensures that children with special needs can safely and successfully play baseball. The Miracle Field is the largest baseball field that MondoUSA has ever installed. Upgrades include the electronic scoreboard and state-of-the-art PA system that provide Miracle Leaguers a unique experience.
Phase II of the Miracle Field will include additional accessible parking, drop-off and unloading areas adjacent to the field, and construction of a concession building with storage and ADA accessible restrooms. Phase II will be implemented at a later date when funds become available. The preliminary Phase II budget is approximately $1.0 million. The Jack in the Box Foundation is the lead corporate sponsor for Phase II construction and committed $50,000 on May 19, 2007.
